Interim Curator’s Outgoing Report

Preface

Summer and Fall of 2022, Craig had the honor of serving as the Interim Curator of the New Mexico State University’s University Museum. This outgoing report sketches out some of Craig’s activities while serving in that role, particularly those that are “under the hood” and entail data creation, modification, or presentation. Most of what is documented here pertains to Craig’s efforts to support the collection’s inventory initiated by Otto under Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Inspire! Grants for Small Museums Award IGSM-248937-OMS-21 and New Mexico Humanities Council (NMHC) American Rescue Plan (ARP) Subaward SO253164-17. Additional information is provided on Craig’s efforts in environmental monitoring and exhibit support. Each of these tasks was approached with a commitment to the use free and open source tools with an eye towards leveraging current developments in literate programming (Knuth 1992; Yu and Kumbier 2020; Gandrud 2020) to support museums both on the database back end and with front facing elements like galleries and websites. Hopefully others will find these notes useful in their own museological endeavors.
